The autumn’s symphonic classics with the Arctic Philharmonic and principal conductor Christian Lindbergoffer a programme featuring two Nordic composers celebrating anniversaries, one of the most beautiful Nordic overtures, a birthday symphony and one of the world’s best known solo works performed by the Nordic shooting star, cellist Jakob Koranyi.

Edward Elgar concerto for cello and orchestra is a cornerstone of the cellist’s repertoire and was written in the period after World War I. The work gained real prominence in the early 20th century through the cellist Jacqueline du Pré’s interpretation and fame. We are joined by the wonderful young cellist Jakob Koranyi, who will perform his interpretation of the masterpiece together with the orchestra’s principal conductor Christian Lindberg

We celebrate the 150th anniversariesof Jean Sibelius and Carl Nielsen with Sibelius’ lively fifth birthday symphony and Nielsen’s beautiful popular Helios overture. In his overture, Danish composer Carl Nielsen depicts a sunrise on the Aegean Sea, a work that was conducted during its premiere in 1903 by none other than Norwegian Johan Svendsen. Tonight’s main work, Sebelius’ Symphony No. 5, was commissioned by the Finnish government to mark Sibelius’ 50th birthday, and the premiere performance on his birthday, 8 December 1915, by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra was under the direction of composer and birthday boy himself.

“Silence and darkness. The sun rises with a joyous song of praise. It wanders its golden way and sinks quietly into the sea.”- Carl Nielsen’s note on the score of “Helios Overture”
