Janáček's "Intimate letters"
This autumn’s atmospheric chamber concert is devoted to the words and the music in the composer Leoš Janáček’s emotional quartet work “Intimate letters”. Welcome to an evocative evening combining music and refreshments.
In what proved to be the year of his death – 1928 – Leoš Janáček wrote his String Quartet No. 2, which was nicknamed “Intimate letters”. He never got to experience the work being performed. Janáček married early and his wife was only 16 when the wedding took place. For 18 years he had a muse who he was very enthusiastic about, the young Kamila Stösslová, who was 38 years younger than him. Both were already married and, although this relationship between them was purely platonic, it became a burden for Janáček’s marriage. Over the years, the pair exchanged more than 700 letters. This string quartet based on those letters is extremely emotional with everything from the romantic to the modernist, interspersed with discord, hope, despair, naivety and love. The work will be performed by a string quartet from the Arctic Philharmonic and actor from Hålogaland Teater.
This performance is a joint venture between Hålogaland Teater and the Arctic Philharmonic. Light refreshments are included in the ticket price.
This performance is part of the subscription series Piccolo and Total at KulturHuset, Tromsø
