Visit Tromsø-Region AS strengthens its commitment to sustainability through membership in the UN Global Compact

UN Global Compact is the United Nations organisation for sustainable business and the world's largest corporate initiative for sustainability. Included in the initiative are over 22,000 members in 160 countries, now also Visit Tromsø-Region! Through the membership, the destination company commits to fulfilling universal principles in human rights, labour standards, environment, and anti-corruption.

– Joining the UN Global Compact is a natural extension of our promise to promote sustainable and responsible tourism in the Tromsø region, says Inger-Lise Brones, advisor for sustainability and society at Visit Tromsø-Region.

The membership is a recognition of the destination company's important sustainability work over several years, including Innovation Norway’s national Sustainable Destination label. The membership becomes an additional commitment to incorporate sustainability in all aspects of the business.

– Through the UN Global Compact, we look forward to receiving input that we can benefit from in our work with responsibility in general, both in our own company and for the entire destination, says Brones.

Moreover, the membership opens several new doors, allowing Visit Tromsø-Region to participate in development projects and competence enhancement, and the opportunity to contact other members of the UN Global Compact worldwide, to exchange ideas, strategies, and best practices.

Responsible guests

Through membership in the UN Global Compact, we strengthen the Tromsø region's reputation as a responsible destination, among other things by attracting eco conscious visitors.

– By actively using the UN Global Compact membership in our marketing and communication, the Tromsø region can position itself as a leading sustainable destination and become even better at attracting guests who share the same values. We particularly want guests who value authentic experiences, and who are interested in learning about and preserving local culture and nature. Environmentally conscious guests are often willing to pay more for quality services and products, says Brones.

– We will also signal to all our guests that we expect and promote sustainable behaviour, which can contribute to even more responsibility among those who visit us.

Keyword: year-round tourism

Through the UN Global Compact, and through our label as a Sustainable Destination, lies a commitment to work with all dimensions of the sustainability concept. Many people associate sustainable tourism with measures to reduce emissions to the air and the amount of plastic waste in the ocean. While taking care of the nature and the environment are important components, this deals with far more. The tourism should contribute to local value creation, safe year-round jobs and ensure that the local community is a good place to live – now and in the future.

Year-round tourism contributes to creating and maintaining safe jobs throughout the year, which reduces seasonal unemployment and provides stable income for employees. It helps us balance the flow of guests, which reduces pressure on popular areas in the peak seasons.

– Tourism should always respect and celebrate nature, economy, and culture. We now look very much forward to using the UN Global Compact as a meaningful and useful tool in our further development, says Brones.
