Opening new visitor centre in pedestrian street

Visit Tromsø-Region AS is opening a new visitor centre in the heart of Tromsø. The location will strengthen the city’s hosting services and ensure that residents and visitors alike have easy access to information and services all year round.

During the next month, the destination company will move into its new premises at Storgata 83. As this new visitor centre has ground-level windows facing Tromsø’s busy pedestrian street, the Managing Director of Visit Tromsø-Region, Lone Helle, is convinced that they could not possibly have found a better location.

“Windows facing the pedestrian street are perfect! It makes us easily accessible to a wide audience, which is in line with our aim of being an inclusive and accessible resource for everyone who visits or lives in Tromsø,” she says.

The visitor centre will be open virtually every day of the year, while the opening hours will vary somewhat depending on the season. A team of competent employees proficient in various languages will offer useful and neutral information to everyone who enters, as well as sell activities, bus tickets, the Tromsø pass and local products.

Wishing to expand the hosting services

To take care of the growing number of visitors to Tromsø, the Managing Director of Visit Tromsø-Region believes that several visitor centres should be established in the city. Providing visitors with immediate service upon arrival means information services are necessary at “entrance gateways” to the Tromsø region such as the pedestrian street and the port terminal. Moreover, there is a need for information services at Tromsø Airport for international arrivals and at the cruise terminal in Breivika during major cruise calls.

In 2023, more than one million people travelled via the Port Terminal, while more than two million travelled via the airport. About 175,000 cruise guests visited the city.

“It’s high time to expand the hosting services. Interest in Tromsø is growing and we must ensure that visitors receive access to information quickly. This makes them safer and more knowledgeable. This enables them to make good choices, take better care of Tromsø and spend more money locally,” says Helle.

“We are now working with several key stakeholders to secure funding to extend our hosting services,” she says.

Opens in March

The Visit Tromsø team will use February to move into new premises and hope to open the doors on 4 March. Helle is looking forward to welcoming guests into the new premises.

“This is something we are all really looking forward to! The entire team can’t wait to open the doors and continue contributing to Tromsø being an attractive place to visit and a good place to live,” she says.
