Welcome to a winter experience in Tromsø

Winter in Tromsø brings colourful skies, snow and adventures.

The season is shaped by its changing light. As the days grow shorter, autumn colours give way to the deep blue tones that mark the beginning of winter. The Polar Night begins in late November, when the sun remains below the horizon and we experience only a few hours of twilight each day. Although the days are short, they are full of colour, with the sky shifting between soft shades of pink and purple and deep blue hues.

In the evening, you may be lucky enough to see the northern lights dancing across the sky. Tromsø lies beneath the auroral oval, giving the region excellent conditions for experiencing the aurora.

From mid-January, the light gradually returns. Although the sun rises above the horizon around the middle of the month, the surrounding mountains mean that it is usually not visible from central Tromsø until later in January.

Throughout winter, Tromsø is a lively and welcoming city. Festivals, concerts, local food and cosy cafés make it easy to combine Arctic experiences with city life, making Tromsø a great starting point for a winter holiday in Northern Norway.

There is also plenty to discover beyond the city. The surrounding region offers fjords, mountains and smaller communities where you can slow down and enjoy the quiet of the Arctic landscape.

The Polar Night lasts approximately from 27 November to 15 January, while the exact date when the returning sun becomes visible depends on your location and the surrounding terrain.
