Cross the open sea by boat and hike to the summit of Håja, the icon mountain island that inspired the design of the Arctic Cathedral in Tromsø.

Join the Arctic Route bus for a scenic trip to Sommarøy, a popular destination for nature enthusiasts. From Sommarøy, we take you by boat to Håja, a mountain island rising dramatically from the sea.

After a 30-minute boat ride through wild coastal landscapes, we anchor up and start the hike. The trail begins with a steep ascent, but becomes easier as we move higher up in the terrain. After approximately 1.5 hours, we reach the summit at 486 metres, where you can enjoy fantastic 360-degree views of fjords, sea and mountains. Under the midnight sun, the view is extra special.

After taking in the views, we hike back down and return by boat, keeping an eye out for sea eagles and marine wildlife along the way. If the full hike feels too challenging, you can stop along the way and enjoy the beautiful landscape.

Good to know:

• Minimum age to participate is 14 years
• This tour is not accessible for wheelchair users
• Pets are not allowed on this tour

Please bring: Windproof jacket and trousers, large water bottle and snacks, warm fleece/jumper, hat and gloves and sturdy shoes

About Sommarøy Adventure

Sommarøy Adventure is a tour company that offers coastal adventures, including sea kayaking, boat tours and sea-to-summit excursions on foot, skis or snowshoes.


We run tours all year round, with a focus on sea kayaking in both the midnight sun and the polar night. Depending on the season, we offer hiking trips and wildlife safaris, as well as northern lights tours, snowshoe hikes and ski touring.



During the summer season, our primary base is located in Sommarøy, a sea kayaking paradise approximately one hour from Tromsø and a popular destination for kayaking and nature enthusiasts.



In winter, we operate from our outdoor base camp in Eidkjosen and offer convenient bus transfers from Tromsø city centre, which takes only about 15 minutes.
