Cross the open sea by boat and hike to the summit of Håja, the icon mountain island that inspired the design of the Arctic Cathedral in Tromsø.

General information

This tour is operated by Sommarøy Adventure.

This tour takes you by boat from Sommarøy to the island of Håja, which rises dramatically from the ocean. After a 30-minute boat ride through wild coastal landscapes, we anchor and start the hike.

The trail begins with a steep climb and then becomes easier as we move higher. In about 1.5 hours, we reach the summit at 486 metres, with stunning 360-degree views of fjords, sea and mountains. The summit is especially magical under the midnight sun.

After enjoying the views, we hike back down and cruise back while looking out for sea eagles and marine life. If the full hike feels too challenging, you can stop along the way and enjoy the amazing scenery.

Important information:

• Transport to and from Tromsø is not included.
• The minimum age to participate in this tour is 14 years.
• This tour is not wheelchair accessible.
• Pets are not allowed on this tour.
• This tour is only available on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Included: Free parking at the activity centre, guided hike, certified guide/captain and transport by small boat to Håja
Please bring: Weather-appropriate clothing, windproof jacket and trousers, good hiking shoes, beanie and gloves, large water bottle, snacks and warm fleece or jumper

About Sommarøy Adventure

Sommarøy Adventure is a tour company that offers coastal adventures, including sea kayaking, boat tours and sea-to-summit excursions on foot, skis or snowshoes.


We run tours all year round, with a focus on sea kayaking in both the midnight sun and the polar night. Depending on the season, we offer hiking trips and wildlife safaris, as well as northern lights tours, snowshoe hikes and ski touring.



During the summer season, our primary base is located in Sommarøy, a sea kayaking paradise approximately one hour from Tromsø and a popular destination for kayaking and nature enthusiasts.



In winter, we operate from our outdoor base camp in Eidkjosen and offer convenient bus transfers from Tromsø city centre, which takes only about 15 minutes.



We are proud to have local guides with extensive knowledge of the region and the skills needed for guiding in the Arctic.
