General information
This tour is conducted by SkiTromsø.
The journey begins at Tromsø Skistadion, where your guide greets you and provides all the necessary equipment: skis, poles, and boots. After a quick fitting and introduction, you head out onto the tracks for a short, simple lesson covering the basics of cross-country skiing. No prior experience is required, and your guide makes sure everyone feels comfortable and safe before you set off.
The structure of the lesson has been refined with input from local Olympic champion and co-owner Erik Valnes, so the exercises are designed to help complete beginners make quick and natural progress. This doesn’t make the tour hard or competitive – it is still relaxed, social, and fully adapted to first-timers.
Once you’re ready, you glide into the peaceful Arctic landscape at the top of Tromsø island. The tour takes you along easy, beginner-friendly trails, with the guide adjusting the pace from relaxed to a bit more energetic if you like. There are plenty of stops along the way to rest, take photos, and enjoy the snow-covered surroundings. Whenever there is a natural pause, your guide may share a few stories about skiing and everyday life in Norway, giving you a light introduction to why this sport is so important here.
Along the way, you experience how skiing is deeply rooted in Norwegian culture – from the saying that “Norwegians are born with skis on their feet” to how skiing is part of spending time outside together in winter.
About halfway through the activity, you will pause for a warm drink and a Norwegian snack, giving you a chance to relax, chat, and enjoy the silence of Tromsø’s winter landscape. Then you continue your journey with renewed energy, practicing your skills as you grow more confident on skis – still at the pace that feels right for you.
The experience ends back at the starting point, where you return the equipment and say goodbye to your guide. You leave with the joy of having tried a new skill, a feeling of achievement on skis, and a glimpse into how important cross-country skiing is in Norway.
Please note: the course content has been developed with input from local Olympic champion and co-owner Erik Valnes, but he will not personally guide the tour.
