Rental car, buses and camper vans in Tromsø

Tromsø is home to several well-established and internationally recognised car rental companies, and there are also operators offering motorhome and camper van hire for both short and longer stays. Before choosing to rent a car, it is important to be aware that driving in the Tromsø region can be challenging, particularly in winter, and requires experience, caution and thorough preparation.

Icy roads, rapidly changing weather conditions, long distances and narrow roads place high demands on the driver’s experience and judgement. Before setting out, we strongly recommend familiarising yourself with local driving conditions and current advice for winter driving.

Good to know

  • Choose public transport or organised activities and tours where transport is included if you are inexperienced with winter driving, or if road conditions are challenging.
  • Do not drink alcohol before driving. Alcohol laws in Norway are strict, and penalties for driving under the influence are severe. The maximum legal blood alcohol limit is 0.02% for all vehicles.
  • If you are taking medication, make sure it does not affect your ability to drive. Pay particular attention to medicines marked with a red warning triangle.
  • Seat belts are compulsory for everyone in the vehicle. Driving without a seat belt is subject to fines.
  • It is illegal to use a hand-held mobile phone while driving.
  • Headlights must always be on, even in summer. This applies to all vehicles on the road.
  • In the event of an accident, the vehicle must carry at least one reflective vest, a warning triangle and valid third-party insurance.
  • Observe speed limits. On open roads, the limit is usually 80 km/h unless otherwise signposted. In built-up areas, it is usually 50 km/h, and may be 30 km/h.
  • Winter tyres are mandatory from 15 October to 1 May. Studded tyres may also be necessary outside this period if weather and road conditions require it.
  • Driving licences from EU/EEA countries are valid in Norway as long as they are in date. Licences from most countries outside the EU/EEA may be used for up to three months.
  • When renting a car, it may be required that your driving licence has been valid for at least one year.
