Try It – ski touring experience

Curious about ski touring in Tromsø? Join a beginner-friendly adventure in the mountains surrounding the city and learn how to use ski touring equipment and move through snowy mountain terrain.

Your experience begins at Tromsø Outdoor in the city centre, where you'll meet your guide and collect any pre-booked rental equipment. From there, you'll travel to a nearby mountain area.

Together with your guide, you'll make your way uphill through the forest on touring skis with climbing skins. The aim is to explore gentle mountain terrain, with the possibility of reaching above the tree line if conditions allow. Along the way, there will be time to enjoy the views, look for animal tracks and take photos of the Arctic landscape.

Your guide will introduce you to ski touring techniques, efficient movement on skis and downhill skiing skills. The tour takes place at a relaxed pace, with breaks along the way, and is adapted to the group's abilities and experience.

No previous ski touring experience is required, but basic alpine skiing skills are recommended. You should also be able to get back onto your skis independently after a fall.

Included:
• Guiding and instruction by a certified guide
• Return transport between Tromsø and the mountain area

Food and drink:
• Food, snacks and drinks are not included
• Bring sufficient food and hot or cold drinks for a 3–4-hour excursion

Please bring:
• Windproof and waterproof jacket and trousers, or suitable ski clothing
• Wool or synthetic base layers
• Wool or fleece mid-layer
• Wool socks and a warm hat
• Two pairs of gloves or mittens
• Extra down jacket or down vest
• Sunglasses, sun protection and sports tape
• Backpack, approximately 30–40 litres
• Food, snacks and hot or cold drinks
• Helmet and ski goggles, either your own or rented

Equipment:
Ski touring equipment is not included and must be rented in advance from Tromsø Outdoor. Choose the Basic Ski Touring Package, including touring skis, boots, climbing skins and poles. A ski helmet and goggles must also be brought or rented.

Minimum age: 12 years

Number of participants: Minimum 3, maximum 6 people per guide.

Level of difficulty: Easy. No previous ski touring experience is required, but basic alpine skiing skills are recommended.

Meeting time and place: 10:00 AM (10:00) at Tromsø Outdoor, Fredrik Langes gate 14, 9008 Tromsø. Meet your guide and collect any pre-booked rental equipment.

Departure time: 10:30 AM (10:30), with transport to the mountain area.

Duration: 3–4 hours in total, including transportation.

Important information:
• The tour requires a minimum of three participants. If too few people book, the operator may cancel the tour or offer an alternative departure.
• Basic alpine skiing skills are required, including the ability to get back onto your skis independently after a fall.
• This activity is not recommended for people with knee problems.
• All participants must have their own travel and accident insurance.
• Participants must follow the guide's instructions and inform the operator of any injuries or health conditions that may affect the experience.
