Experience the frozen landscapes and Arctic waters between Tromsø and Skjervøy on a nine-hour journey combining travel by bus and boat.
General information
This tour is operated by Brim Explorer.
Travel from Tromsø to Skjervøy by bus and boat in search of whales. Along the way, you can experience the fjord landscape and the Lyngen Alps from both land and sea. The coach offers comfortable seating, while the hybrid-electric vessel has heated panoramic saloons with large windows.
At the beginning of the tour, guests are divided into two groups. One group travels to Skjervøy by boat and returns to Tromsø by bus. The other group travels to Skjervøy by bus and returns to Tromsø by boat.
Start the day by boat:
Depart Tromsø by boat and travel through Arctic waters to Skjervøy. The journey takes approximately 2.5 hours. On arrival, around 1.5 hours are spent searching for and observing whales. The vessel then docks in Skjervøy, where you continue by bus through the fjord landscape and past the Lyngen Alps on the return journey to Tromsø.
Start the day by bus:
Depart Tromsø by bus and travel through the fjord landscape and past the Lyngen Alps to Skjervøy. On arrival, board the hybrid-electric vessel and sail towards the areas where whales usually feed. Around 1.5 hours are spent searching for and observing whales before the vessel continues back to Tromsø.
Guiding throughout the journey:
The guides will share their knowledge of the Arctic region during both the bus and boat journeys. On board the vessel, the crew will look for humpback whales, fin whales, sperm whales and orcas. It may take time to locate the whales, and sightings cannot be guaranteed.
During the bus journey, the guides will talk about the Tromsø region and everyday life during the Arctic winter. You may also see wildlife such as deer or moose along the way, although sightings are uncommon and cannot be guaranteed.
Whale watching with reduced engine noise:
When whales are spotted, the vessel switches to its quieter electric propulsion system to reduce noise and disturbance. Approximately 10% of the tour is normally completed using electric propulsion.
The vessel has heated indoor saloons with panoramic windows. Food and drinks can be purchased from the café on board. Please bring warm clothing if you wish to spend time outside, as conditions at sea can be very cold.

About Brim Explorer
Northern Norway’s coast – impressive, isolated and vulnerable. Stretching to the top of the world, this Arctic wilderness is an oasis for exploration and discovery. Our pioneering hybrid-electric catamaran brings a new dimension to your Arctic adventure.
With environmentally conscious design driven by the latest sustainable technology, you silently carve through crystal clear waters. The sound of silence is a majestic experience, especially at sea where the absence of disturbing engine noise allows us to get even closer to nature. An underwater drone and hydrophone bring you pictures and sounds from below the surface and give you a unique insight to this deep blue world.
During the winter season we offer silent whale watching or wildlife cruises during the day, depending on the season, and evening cruises where you can combine the spectacular northern lights with an exclusive five course tasting menu. The menu is based on local produce and traditions with a modern twist. There’s also a full vegetarian menu. During the day you can purchase a selection of food and drink on board.
We welcome families on our ships and offer activities for children, a children’s menu tailored to younger pallets and a nursery for infants.
Our ship is built with universal design, enabelling guests with disabilities to participate. Guests arriving in a wheelchair will have access to the main deck where you can move both indoor and outdoor on deck and find accessible toilet facilities, the restaurant and information screens.
Our passion for the ocean and the environment is the backbone of our operation. We collaborate with Zing Ocean Conservancy, a non-profit environmental organization working to conserve and improve the ocean´s health and prevent marine pollution. As well as providing sustainable travel, we aim to give 1% of our profits to ocean conservation efforts, starting 2019.
