Advanced Dog Sledding at Camp Tamok

General information

This tour is operated by Destination Tromsø.

The tour begins with a 90-minute bus journey from Tromsø city centre to Camp Tamok in Tamokdalen. Upon arrival, you will receive a thermal suit, boots and mittens. Your guide will then provide safety instructions and teach you how to handle the sled before the dog sledding begins.

You will share a sled with another participant and take turns driving and riding as a passenger. As the musher, you will guide the dog team along snow-covered trails through the Arctic winter landscape. Halfway through the tour, you will switch roles so that both participants have the opportunity to drive.

This is a physically demanding activity. You must be prepared to help the dogs by pushing the sled, particularly on uphill sections or when there is fresh snow on the trail.

After the dog sledding, you will visit the husky kennel and meet the sled dogs. A warm meal and hot drinks are then served around the fire in a traditional Sámi lavvu before the return journey to Tromsø.

Food and drinks: A warm meal and hot drinks are included. Please provide details of any food allergies or dietary requirements when booking. A fee of NOK 150 may apply if these are not provided in advance.

Please bring: Warm clothing suitable for the weather, preferably worn in several layers, and a scarf or buff. Ski goggles are optional.

Number of participants: Min. 2 – Max. 12

Level of difficulty: Challenging. The activity requires good physical fitness, strength, balance and coordination. Both participants sharing a sled must meet these requirements.

Departure time and place: Tromsø Havn Prostneset, inside the main entrance hall, Samuel Arnesens gate 5, Tromsø.

• Daytime tour: 9:30 AM (09:30)
• Afternoon tour: 2 PM (14:00)

Duration: Approx. 6.5 hours, including up to 90 minutes of total trail time.

Terrain: Uphill sections and some flat terrain

Important information:

• The recommended maximum age is 65 years, and the recommended maximum weight is 120 kg per person.
• Pregnant guests cannot participate.
• The activity is not suitable for wheelchair users.
• You must be able to help push the sled, particularly uphill and in fresh snow. The trail may include narrow sections and sharp bends.
• Be prepared for cold, challenging and unpredictable winter weather.
• The guides reserve the right to refuse participation if a guest’s physical condition or behaviour presents a safety risk. Guests under the influence of alcohol or other substances cannot participate.
• The tour may be cancelled in dangerous weather or trail conditions. In this case, you will be offered the opportunity to reschedule, change to a similar activity or receive a full refund.
