How we present partners and products at the Tourist Information

One question we regularly receive from partners is how we work with presenting activities and experiences at the Tourist Information. In this article, we would like to provide some insight into how we work with recommending and presenting products and experiences to our guests.

Our starting point is always the guest – what they would like to experience, what their needs are, and what suits their stay best. This means our recommendations will naturally vary from guest to guest.

Another question we occasionally receive is whether companies with ownership interests in Visit Tromsø-Region are given priority when we recommend products. The answer is no. The guest’s wishes and needs are always our main focus, and our goal is to help ensure that every guest has the best possible experience in the Tromsø region. We are also committed to contributing to sales for our partners by helping guests find the experiences that suit them best.

Let’s use northern lights tours as an example. If a guest is travelling with small children, it would be natural for us to suggest tours that are well suited to families, such as experiences with a basecamp rather than long bus journeys. Other guests prioritise comfort and may prefer a northern lights cruise with a heated lounge, large windows and toilets on board. If someone is approaching the end of their stay without having seen the northern lights yet, we may recommend a longer northern lights chase, especially if weather conditions suggest better chances further inland in the region.

Our goal is always to find experiences that best match the guest’s wishes and expectations.

At the same time, we see that the guest’s decision-making process often starts long before they meet us. Most guests have already done their own research, viewed photos, read reviews and formed an impression of what they are looking for. Many also come to us with specific requests to book a named operator they have already seen or heard about.

This means that we provide guidance and recommendations, while the final decision is ultimately made by the guest based on their overall impression of the product. Product presentation therefore plays a very important role. Photos, descriptions, inclusions and clear information are often deciding factors when guests choose between different options. This also applies when guests book directly through our website.

This is why strong product presentations are so important. Honest and informative descriptions, inspiring photos and clear expectation management make it easier both for us to recommend the right product, and for the guest to choose your experience.

When it comes to bookings through our website, guests search for, compare and choose products themselves. We continuously work on improving the website and making it easier for guests to find relevant experiences. At the same time, we encourage all partners to regularly review their own product presentations and look for opportunities to improve both text, images and information.

We highly value the good dialogue we have with our partners, and you are always welcome to visit the Tourist Information for a chat or to deliver updated material and flyers.

We are committed to ensuring that guests have the best possible experiences in the Tromsø region. We therefore also appreciate being informed by e-mail to [email protected] if tours booked through us are at risk of cancellation due to low participant numbers. In some cases, we may wish to help generate additional bookings for tours that are already close to operating, helping to avoid cancellations – to the benefit of both guests and partners.

As an authorised Tourist Information office with the green “i”, we are committed to following the requirements that come with the authorisation. In practice, this means that the Tourist Information office should:

  • provide objective and host-oriented information
  • take the guest’s needs into account
  • present a broad range of offers and avoid unfairly favouring individual operators
  • act credibly towards both guests and the tourism industry

This is closely linked to our role as an official Tourist Information office and destination management organisation. Read more about the authorisation scheme for Tourist Information offices here (in Norwegian).
