The beach is surrounded by steep mountains and offers views towards Vengsøy and the open sea. The drive from Tromsø takes approximately 45 minutes.

Beach life in Grøtfjord

The large sandy beach at the head of Grøtfjord is a popular destination on warm summer days. The water is shallow near the shore, but remains cold even in summer. The area is well suited to families, picnics and relaxing days by the sea.

Grøtfjord is also a lovely place to experience the midnight sun on bright summer evenings. The beach can become very busy when the weather is good, so please be considerate of local residents and other visitors.

Activities in Grøtfjord

The area around Grøtfjord offers several hiking opportunities during summer and autumn. Smørstabben is a relatively short mountain hike with views of the fjord and the landscape on the outer coast of Kvaløya. Be aware that the terrain and weather conditions can change quickly. Always check the conditions before setting out.

Grøtfjord also offers good conditions for surfing and paddling, but the conditions on the outer coast of Kvaløya can be challenging. Choose an activity suited to your level of experience and use the necessary safety equipment.

As the evenings grow darker from late summer, Grøtfjord can be a good place to look for the northern lights. The northern lights are a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed. Darkness, clear skies and aurora activity must occur at the same time.

A parking fee applies at the beach and can be paid via Vipps to Grøtfjord Bygdelag. Check the signs on site for current prices and regulations.

Use the designated fire pits and always check whether lighting a fire is permitted. The general ban on open fires applies from 15 April to 15 September.

How do you get from Tromsø to Grøtfjord?

Grøtfjord is approximately 36 kilometres from Tromsø city centre, and the drive takes around 45 minutes. Travelling by car is the easiest option.

Bus 425 serves Grøtfjord on certain weekdays, but departures are very limited. The bus usually leaves Tromsø in the afternoon and returns early the following morning. Grøtfjord is therefore generally not suitable for a day trip by bus. Weekend services may not be available, and timetables vary during school terms, holidays and different seasons. Be considerate when visiting Grøtfjord

Grøtfjord is both a popular outdoor recreation area and a small local community. Park only in designated spaces, do not block roads or driveways, take your rubbish with you and use the toilets provided at the beach. This helps protect the area and ensures an enjoyable visit for residents and visitors alike.
