Recommended places of interest and activities
  • The Botanical Gardens – An outdoor summer attraction (in winter, the garden is covered with snow and ice, which makes it impossible to see the plants). Study the around 28 themed collections including species from old Northern Norwegian gardens and different parts of the world, such as the Arctic, the Himalayas and South America.

  • Charlottenlund – Year-round outdoor activities. In winter, you can have fun with toboggan runs, ski trails, ice skating rinks, ski jumps and barbecue areas while in summer you can enjoy trying the fitness equipment, frisbee golf, a football pitch, hiking trails, climbing racks, a skate track, sports court, campfire sites and a sand volleyball court.

  • Hike to Fløya (671m) via the Sherpatrappa – A great walk in the summer and one of the best places in the city to enjoy the beautiful midnight sun. Closer to autumn you might be able to see the Northern Lights from the upper cable car station. The Sherpatrappa (Sherpa steps) start at Lilleaksla 150m. The Sherpatrappa was built by Sherpas from Nepal and was completed in 2018. Sherpatrappa has over 1000 steps and goes up to the mountain plateau at Fjellheisen (Storsteinen 421m). From Storsteinen you can follow the trail up towards Fløya.

  • Lavvo in Tromsdalen (Gutta på Skauen) – Can be used by everyone, open year-round and makes a cosy setting to spend time together. The area consists of a large lavvo, an open lean-to cabin, campfire sites and toilets. Nearby, guests can make use of ski trails, hiking trails and toboggan slopes.

  • Prestvannet lake – A beloved hiking destination located at the top of Tromsøya and full of life in the summer in the form of birds, small fish and people who make use of the water and the surrounding trails. The lake freezes in winter and forms a large, natural ice rink for the populace. Since it is also quite dark in winter, it is a popular place to see the Northern Lights.

  • Telegrafbukta – A park on the south side of the island where you can barbecue, swim, exercise and hang out year-round. It is a popular place for locals wanting to get away from the city. The music festival Bukta is held there in summer and the Ishud bathing club go swimming every Friday throughout the year.
