About us

The vessel has also been used for many polar expeditions. The entire interior, both above and below deck, is original, along with the sailing rig and small hunting boats. Today, the vessel can be admired as a monument to Tromsø’s important Arctic hunting traditions.

The exhibition SNOWHOW

In the dock beneath the vessel, we present the exhibition SNOWHOW – What the Polar Heroes Learned from the Inuit, the Sámi and the Arctic Seafarers. The exhibition explores the knowledge Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen needed to succeed in their polar expeditions, and reflects on how Norwegian polar knowhow — or snowhow — rests on the knowledge of Arctic Indigenous peoples and North Norwegian Arctic seafarers.

Accessibility: Please note that the stairs inside the ship are very steep. Visitors who are not comfortable climbing ladders are advised to stay on the main deck. Due to high thresholds and dim lighting in parts of the ship, we recommend that visitors with visual impairments are accompanied.
