Northern Lights Chase with Authentic North Norwegian Charm

This tour is operated by Tromsø Friluftsenter.

As one of the pioneers of Northern Lights tourism in Tromsø, we have over 20 years of experience and extensive knowledge of the local area. We want to give you a genuine Northern Norwegian experience filled with local hospitality, charm and humour that goes beyond the Northern Lights tour you may have imagined. We create memories from the heart and will do everything we can to help make your Northern Lights dream come true.

We will drive wherever necessary in search of clear skies. Sometimes this takes us all the way to Finland, so remember to dress warmly. At certain times of the year, conditions in Tromsø can also be icy, so we recommend bringing ice grips for your shoes. We provide thermal suits that can be worn over your own warm clothing.

We meet outside Scandic Ishavshotel in the city centre, within walking distance of most hotels. Before the tour, we carefully monitor the weather throughout the day and plan where we have the best chance of finding clear skies and seeing the Northern Lights. We work with experienced guides to give you the best possible experience. The evening begins with a short film about the Northern Lights, combining science and myths to give you a better understanding of the phenomenon.

If the weather is favourable at our home base, we will take you to our coastal farm. Here, you can experience a historic farm and hear stories about coastal life dating back to 1880. We have a lavvu where we can sit sheltered from the weather while sharing stories about our Sámi, Kven and local heritage.

If conditions take us elsewhere, we create a welcoming atmosphere wherever we stop, with a fire, seating, hot coffee, hot chocolate, tea and chocolate cake.

During the evening, we take professional photographs of you under the Northern Lights. The photos will be available to download from our Flickr account. We can also help you with the settings on your camera or phone so that you can take your own photos.

Some days, the weather in Tromsø may look unfavourable, but we continuously monitor the forecasts and base our decisions on the latest information available before departure.

If we consider the chances of finding clear skies to be too low, we may give you the choice before departure of whether you would still like to join the tour.

You can then choose not to join and receive a full refund, or continue with the tour and take the chance. Please note that if you choose to join the tour, no refund will be given if we are unable to find the Northern Lights.

Whatever the conditions, we will do our very best. Remember: “We want you to see the Northern Lights just as much as you do!”

Minimum age: 5 years. The tour is not suitable for younger children due to the cold conditions and late time of day.

Please bring: Warm clothing, suitable footwear, a hat, gloves and a scarf. We also recommend bringing a camera and ice spikes if conditions are slippery.

Number of participants: Max. 19 guests

Level of difficulty: Easy. Please note that the tour takes place outdoors in the dark, and some walking may be on uneven or slippery terrain. The experience will be adapted to the group where possible.

Departure time and meeting point: Outside Scandic Ishavshotel, Fredrik Langes gate 2, 9008 Tromsø.

• 15 September – 19 March: Please meet at 6:35 PM (18:35). Departure at 6:45 PM (18:45)

• 20 March – 31 March: Please meet at 7:50 PM (19:50). Departure at 8:00 PM (20:00)

Duration: Approximately 5–7 hours.

Important information:

• The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed
• If the weather forecast is particularly poor, the supplier may offer you the choice of leaving before departure for a full refund or joining the tour without a refund if the Northern Lights are not seen
• Vegan food is not available. Please provide information about any food allergies in the comment field when booking
• Due to Arctic weather and travel conditions, the supplier recommends having valid travel insurance
