The Northern Lights – Myth and science
For centuries, the Northern Lights have inspired awe and wonder. In old Norse mythology, they were believed to be reflections from the armor of the Valkyries guiding fallen warriors to Valhalla. The Sámi people, the indigenous inhabitants of Northern Scandinavia, held the aurora in deep respect, often associating it with spirits and considering it a powerful, mystical presence in the sky.
Today, we know the aurora is a natural phenomenon caused by charged particles from the sun colliding with the Earth’s atmosphere, creating shimmering curtains of green, violet, and sometimes even red or blue. Yet even with science to explain it, the magic remains – every appearance is unique, unpredictable, and unforgettable.
The experience
As we sail into the darkness, away from the city lights, you’ll find yourself in the best possible position to enjoy the aurora in peace. Whether it drifts gently across the sky in soft waves of green or bursts into cascades of dancing light, the Northern Lights never cease to amaze.
Our live guide on board will enrich your journey, sharing both scientific insights and legendary tales about the aurora, as well as stories about Arctic culture, nature, and life in the far north.
Onboard comfort
Inside, the heated lounge offers panoramic views of the night sky, while the spacious outdoor decks give you the freedom to step outside for the clearest possible view – and the perfect photo. To keep you warm and comfortable, coffee and tea are included throughout the journey. A warm meal can be pre-ordered in advance, and there is also a selection of snacks and drinks available for purchase on board.
