Sállir Reindeer

About us

Sállir Reindeer is run by our family, with every family member involved in the business. We are reindeer herders and hold reindeer-herding rights in parts of the island of Sállir/Kvaløya, just outside Tromsø. Reindeer herding is our livelihood and a central part of our daily lives, culture and identity.

The tourism side of our business was recently started by the younger generation of the family. We want to welcome small groups and share a genuine part of our Sámi culture and way of life.

Every family member has a role. Father is responsible for transporting guests from Tromsø to us. Our mother is the family expert on duodji, traditional Sámi handicrafts. She creates the traditional clothing we wear when welcoming guests, working in the mountains and dressing up for special occasions.

When visitors arrive at our place, they are welcomed by the youth in our family, who guide them throughout the experience. Guests meet the reindeer at close range and learn about reindeer herding, Sámi culture, the surrounding nature and our family’s life on Sállir/Kvaløya.

Our visits are kept small, personal and relaxed, making time for conversations and questions. Guests are welcomed into the surroundings where we live and work, and meet the people who are directly involved in the local reindeer herding.

Our goal is to share our culture and lifestyle with warmth and respect, and to give visitors an intimate and meaningful memory to take home.
