Join Sami guides for a reindeer experience.

General information

This tour is conducted by Tromsø Arctic Reindeer Experience.

Enjoy a 10-15 minute sleigh ride as the reindeer guide you around the valley and along the coast. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to feed 300 of these magnificent animals before entering the gamme for a hot traditional meal cooked over the fire. Finish the day by gathering around the fire to listen to Sami history, stories and joiking (songs).

Itinerary:
-Pick up from the bus terminal at Tromsø Havn Prostneset (Samuel Arnesens gate 5, 9008, Tromsø) at 9.45 AM
(or 12.45 PM for afternoon tours)
-25-minute bus drive to the reindeer camp
-A 10 to 15-minute reindeer sledding ride
-Feeding of wild reindeer around the camp
-Guests can test lasso throwing (but not on real reindeer)
-Warm drinks inside a warm gamme (traditional Sami hut)
-Warm lunch of bidos (a traditional reindeer stew) with more hot
drinks and cookies (vegetarian / vegan / gluten free option available)
-Storytelling of Sami culture and a joik performance (traditional Sami
folk song)
-25 min bus ride back to Tromsø city centre. Back in Tromsø at about
14.00 (or 17.00 for the afternoon tours)

About Tromsø Arctic Reindeer

We are a traditional Reindeer herding family offering authentic Sami Reindeer experience with over 300 Reindeer at the camp within a 30-minute drive from Tromsø.


We offer a number of tours, including Reindeer Sledding, and you will be hosted by local Sami Reindeer herders who will show and teach you about Reindeer herding and Sami culture. You get to feed these magnificent animals and experience the joy of being close to Reindeer, the feeling of coming into a warm lavvu (Sami tent) and gamme (Sami Wooden Hut), the smells and tastes of traditional Sami food and the sounds of the traditional joik.



All of our tours are family-friendly and suitable for even the youngest of children and infants. All children under 6 go for free. On our tours we offer traditional and delicious Sami food and are happy to cater for special food requests such as vegetarian and gluten-free diets.
