Sami Culture & Reindeer Experience with the Oskal Family

General information

Experience authentic Sami culture close to nature and reindeer. The tour begins at Målselv Fjellandsby, where we travel by car to Andsvatnet. Here, you will be welcomed by the Oskal family — a Sami reindeer-herding family who has carried their traditions and knowledge through generations. You will borrow warm clothing and go by snowmobile to the reindeer herd. Here we gather togheter with the herd, you will get the chance to feed them and maybe pet them. After we go in to a cozy little nordic hut and gather around the fire. Here they will share stories about the reindeer traditions, and the way of life connected to the land and the reindeer.

You will meet the animals up close and learn about the deep cultural and historical importance of reindeer in Sami society — as livelihood, identity, and heritage. This is a calm, warm, and genuine cultural encounter where you meet people and animals on their terms, and gain insight into a living Sami tradition.

Transport from Tromsø to the Welcome Centre at Målselv Fjellandsby is not included.

Practical information:
Transport to/from Sørreisa included. Return to Målselv Mountain village at 3 PM (15:00). We will arrive close to 4 PM (16:00). You will get coffee/Tea and a reindeer snack. Remember to dress with warm layers, winter mittens and beanie.

Alpine Ski Resort

Målselv Fjellandsby features varied and family-friendly slopes suitable for both beginners and experienced skiers. The resort offers a total of 13 km of slopes across 14 different runs, providing something for everyone.

The ski season runs from early December until the end of April, offering several months of true winter enjoyment in beautiful surroundings.

We offer rental of alpine ski equipment, snowboard gear, and helmets.

Experiences and Activities

In recent years, we have strengthened our range of activities and experiences. Our goal is for both locals and visitors to enjoy activities and experience the true “mountain feeling” here. We have great respect for nature and the local community, and we focus on quality over quantity when it comes to the experiences we offer.

Winter Activities:

Exclusive dogsledding tours in quiet mountain and forest landscapes, with a maximum of 6 guests

Snowshoe tours adapted to different skill levels, in small groups

Northern Lights experiences in dark areas with minimal light pollution

Sámi experiences, including cultural storytelling and traditions, hosted by the Oskal family

Cross-country skiing tours, with the option to rent all necessary equipment

The activities are available both as individual experiences and as combined packages, and can be tailored for groups as well as individual guests.

Restaurant & Ski Café

Located in the heart of the mountains, overlooking the open landscape, the restaurant and ski café at Målselv Mountain Village is a natural meeting place for skiers, hikers, and visitors.

We serve food designed to replenish your energy after a day outdoors. The menu features classic Northern Norwegian dishes, simple lunch favorites, and sweet baked goods, accompanied by a selection of hot and cold drinks.

The atmosphere is relaxed and cozy, with large windows that bring the mountains inside and offer beautiful views of the ski slopes and hiking areas. Whether you stop by for a quick break, a warm meal, or simply a cup of coffee by the fireplace, this is a place meant to restore both body and mind.

The restaurant and ski café are well suited for families, groups of friends, and couples, and also serve as a gathering point for activities and events in the mountain village.
