Ski- and snowshoeing

Skiing and Snowshoeing in Tromsø

Skiing and snowshoeing trips enable you to really experience the unique Arctic silence. Since you use your body as an engine, these activities are an active and meaningful way to experience the Tromsø region.

During winter, you are surrounded by snow-covered mountains and a sparkling white landscape. With skis or snowshoes, you can get close to nature and reach areas that would otherwise be difficult to access. Here, it is quiet – completely quiet.

Skis or snowshoes?

Most people are familiar with skiing, but snowshoeing is a good alternative for those who prefer not to ski. Snowshoes make it easier to move through deep snow. The pace is generally slower than skiing, but you will still exercise your whole body while enjoying close contact with nature.

In the Tromsø region, professional activity providers offer a range of guided skiing and snowshoeing trips. You will receive the necessary instruction and be accompanied by knowledgeable local guides throughout the tour. Many trips also include hot drinks, snacks or lunch, while the guides share stories and knowledge about Arctic nature and life in the region.

Some skiing and snowshoeing trips take place in the evening. If the weather is favourable, you may even be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights dancing above the winter landscape.

Join a guided tour

Skiing and snowshoeing trips generally require a moderate level of fitness and provide good exercise for the whole body. Although skis and snowshoes are available to hire, we recommend joining an organised tour with a local guide if you are unfamiliar with the area and conditions.

The weather can change quickly, and there may be a risk of avalanches in mountainous areas. A knowledgeable local guide will assess the conditions and choose a suitable route based on the weather, snow conditions and participants’ abilities. You will also learn more about the landscape and Arctic nature along the way.
