Tromsø International Film Festival

In the third week of January, Tromsø welcomes audiences, filmmakers and visitors to Norway’s largest film festival, right in the heart of the Arctic city.

About us

Founded in 1991, Tromsø International Film Festival is a popular event for local audiences and an important meeting place for the Norwegian and international film industry. The festival presents an international programme of feature films, documentaries, premieres and new voices from around the world.

For one week, screenings take place across central Tromsø, including at Aurora Kino Fokus, Verdensteatret – Cinemateket in Tromsø, Tromsø Kulturhus, Studenthuset Driv, Hålogaland Teater and TIFF’s own outdoor Winter Cinema at Stortorget. The festival also brings an extra energy to the city’s cafés, bars and restaurants.

A central part of the programme is Films from the North, presenting films and stories from Sápmi and the wider circumpolar region, including the Nordic countries, Greenland, Alaska and Canada.

Language

As an international film festival, TIFF screens films in their original languages with English subtitles.

Winter Cinema

Tromsø International Film Festival takes place during the polar night, making it possible to experience cinema outdoors in the middle of winter. The Winter Cinema is located at Stortorget, Tromsø’s main square, and is free for everyone.

The programme includes short films, documentaries, family screenings and special events. It is one of TIFF’s most recognisable meeting places, bringing locals and visitors together in the city centre.
