Tromsø International Film Festival

In the third week of January, we welcome you to Norway’s largest film festival, right in the heart of Tromsø!

About us

Tromsø International Film Festival is a popular film festival for audiences in Tromsø and an important meeting point for the Norwegian and international film industry.

The festival screens challenging quality films for local, national and international audiences, and has experienced incredible growth since it first began in 1991.

The festival lasts for an entire week and features screenings at venues such as Aurora Kino Fokus, Verdensteatret – Cinemateket in Tromsø, Tromsø Kulturhus, Studenthuset Driv, Hålogaland Teater and the festival’s very own Winter Cinema, located outdoors at Stortorget. During the festival, the city’s cafés and restaurants are also filled with film enthusiasts, creating an atmosphere you can truly feel throughout Tromsø.

Language:
As an international film festival, TIFF’s general rule is to screen films in their original language with English subtitles. There are a few exceptions each year, and these are clearly marked in the online film descriptions.

Winter Cinema:
Tromsø International Film Festival takes place during the dark polar nights, which gives TIFF the unique opportunity to screen films outdoors. The outdoor cinema is located at Stortorget, the main square in the heart of Tromsø. The programme includes a selection of shorts and documentaries from the Films from the North programme, along with special screenings for children and various other events. The Winter Cinema is completely free and is an important step towards TIFF’s goal of creating an open and inclusive film festival for everyone.

Tickets:
Ticket sales for the festival start on the Monday of the week before the festival. You can purchase single tickets or a ticket card with multiple tickets at a discounted price. Seating is open, and while many people choose to watch films with friends, it is also common to create your own individual film schedule and attend screenings alone.
