Day 1: Thursday – Whale watching from Tromsø and transport to Senja
Meals: Hot evening meal after check-in
The expedition begins in Tromsø with a whale-watching tour. The boat departs from Tromsø city centre at 08:00 and heads towards Skjervøy. In recent years, humpback whales and orcas have gathered in the fjords around Skjervøy to feed on herring from November until mid-January.
The tour takes place aboard a large, stable boat with a spacious, heated indoor area. Food is available to purchase on board. The boat returns to Tromsø by 17:00.
Whales are wild animals, and sightings cannot be guaranteed. The tour is dependent on the whales being present in the area.
At 20:30, the express boat departs from Prostneset harbour terminal in Tromsø for Finnsnes. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. The ticket is not included and can be purchased on board or through the Troms Billett app. Please arrive at the terminal at least 30 minutes before departure.
Upon arrival, Basecamp Senja will meet you in the arrivals hall in Finnsnes. The journey continues by car along the Norwegian Scenic Route Senja to Posthuset Expedition Lodge in Skaland. The drive takes approximately one hour.
Upon arrival, you will check in, receive information about your stay and be served a hot evening meal.
You can choose to stay at either Posthuset Expedition Lodge or Bedehuset. Posthuset has cosy sleeping cabins in the loft, with curtains for privacy and shared showers and toilets in the hallway. Bedehuset is located approximately 150 metres from Posthuset and offers double rooms with private bathrooms.
An experienced host or guide will be available during most of your stay and will accompany you on the activities. Homemade Northern Norwegian food will be served, and coffee and tea will be available throughout your stay.
You will also receive an introduction to Northern Lights photography. On two evenings, you will head out in search of the Northern Lights from some of Senja’s spectacular viewpoints.
Day 2: Friday – Fjord cruise and Northern Lights safari
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Explore beautiful Bergsfjorden aboard an open 23-foot Zodiac boat. Along the way, you will look for seals and white-tailed eagles while the guide shares stories about Senja.
A warm suit will be provided for the boat trip. You should still wear warm layers underneath the suit.
In the evening, you will head out in search of the Northern Lights along the Norwegian Scenic Route Senja.
Day 3: Saturday – Norwegian Scenic Route Senja
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Visit some of the spectacular viewpoints along the Norwegian Scenic Route Senja, surrounded by the dramatic landscapes of the island’s outer coast.
