Things to do in Tromsø in 24 hours (or less)
Tromsø combines urban city life with spectacular nature – all within easy reach of the centre. Even if you only have a few hours, it is still possible to get a great taste of what to do in Tromsø. Whether you are visiting on a cruise, attending a conference, or just passing through, there are plenty of ways to make the most of your time.
Here are some tips on how to experience both city and nature – in a short amount of time.
Only have a few hours in Tromsø?

City and nature in Tromsø
If you want to experience as much as possible in a short time, cycling is a great option. It allows you to move quickly while taking in both the city and the surrounding nature. You can rent a bike at Tromsø Outdoor. Along the way, you can stop at attractions such as the Arctic–Alpine Botanic Garden – the world’s northernmost botanical garden – featuring plants from Arctic and alpine regions across the globe.

For panoramic views of Tromsø, the Cable Car is a natural highlight. It takes around 30 minutes to walk there from the city centre, across the Tromsø Bridge. At the top of Mount Fløya, 421 metres above sea level, you will be rewarded with sweeping views of the city, mountains and fjords. For a more active option, you can hike up via the Sherpa steps.
Note: The Cable Car is closed for maintenance until 1 June 2026.
In the same area, you will find the Arctic Cathedral – one of Tromsø’s most iconic landmarks, often combined with a visit to the Cable Car.
If you want to see more without much planning, bus 33 takes you around Tromsøya. Hop off at Telegrafbukta for a peaceful walk by the sea, or continue to the Science Centre of Northern Norway, home to Norway’s largest planetarium.
Experiences on the water
In Tromsø, the contrasts are close. From the lively city centre, you are quickly out on the fjord, surrounded by silence and dramatic scenery.
Join a fjord cruise or a fishing trip and experience the landscape from the sea, with mountains rising steeply from the water. If you prefer something more active, a kayak tour lets you get closer to nature at your own pace.
If you are lucky, you might spot Arctic wildlife such as sea eagles, seals or porpoises along the way.
Museums and guided walks
If you would like to learn more about Tromsø and the stories that have shaped the region, there are several options in and around the city centre.
Here, you can explore stories of polar explorers, hunters and life in the Arctic through exhibitions and guided experiences. You can visit places such as Polaria, the Troll Museum or the Arctic University Museum of Norway.
