Meet the animals at a traditional farm, enjoy a simple meal around the fire and look for the northern lights away from the city.

General information

This tour is operated by Nordre Hestnes Gård.

The experience takes place outdoors on the farm, where you can meet the animals and enjoy a simple meal. The farm’s location, far from the city’s light pollution, provides good opportunities to see the northern lights and take beautiful photographs. Spend the evening around the fire on warm seat pads made from Old Norwegian Short Tail Landrace sheepskins, or warm up inside the cosy farm café, where toilets are also available.

The experience takes place in the late afternoon and evening after dark.

A minimum of four participants is required. If the minimum number is not reached, the tour may be cancelled.

About Nordre Hestnes Gård

Experience farm life, Icelandic horses, local food, fishing and accommodation at Nordre Hestnes Gård by Balsfjorden.


Nordre Hestnes Gård has been run by Bård Andreassen since 2006. The farm is located by Balsfjorden, around an hour’s drive from Tromsø, surrounded by fjords and mountains. The farm is certified organic by Debio.



At the farm, you can experience everyday farm life, meet the animals and learn more about local food production. Our farm restaurant serves homemade dishes based on local and seasonal ingredients, with the menu changing throughout the year according to what is available from the farm and surrounding area.



Activities include horse riding on Icelandic horses, farm visits and fishing. During winter, you can also look for the Northern Lights from the farm, away from the lights of the city.



We have our own pier and offer fishing boats and equipment for hire. Accommodation is also available in a house or apartment on the farm.



Experiences at the farm:
