Urban experiences meet raw Arctic nature
Self-Drive Dog Sledding
Experience self-drive dog sledding near Tromsø and take turns driving your own team of Alaskan huskies through the Arctic winter landscape.
General information
This tour is operated by Tromsø Villmarkssenter.
After a short transfer from Tromsø, you will meet the huskies and receive instructions from an experienced guide on how to handle and control the sled.
Two guests share each sled. One person drives while the other rides as a passenger, and you normally switch roles halfway through the trail. The dog sledding lasts approximately 45 minutes, depending on weather and snow conditions.
Professional guides lead the group in their own sleds while you travel through the snowy coastal landscape, with views of mountains, fjords and Tromsø when conditions allow.
After the dog sledding, you will visit the dog yard and meet the puppies before warming up around the fire. A hot meal of bidos, a traditional stew made with reindeer meat, broth and vegetables, is served at the camp. A vegetarian option is available on request.

About Tromsø Villmarkssenter
30 years ago, the renowned dog sled racer Tove Sørensen opened her home to guests from all over the world.
Since then, she and her family have dedicated their lives to educating visitors about Alaskan huskies, dog sledding and Arctic nature through sustainable outdoor activities.
We strive to be inclusive hosts in every regard – everybody who shares our passion is welcome. Vegetarian and vegan alternatives are available for all our programmes, and most of our activities are suitable for the whole family. Let your little ones play with our little ones in the puppy training programme, or take them on a sledding adventure safely chauffeured by one of our experienced guides. Infants aged 0–2 years are always free of charge, and we offer discounts for children.
Our facilities are also wheelchair accessible, and our dog sledding ride programme in particular is well suited to people with disabilities. However, our walkways can be a little difficult to manoeuvre, especially when covered in snow. Therefore, we recommend bringing a helper with you when you visit. Our standard shuttle service requires guests to board the bus independently, but we can arrange specialised transportation upon request. Please contact us if you are planning a visit; we would be delighted to tailor a smooth and barrier-free experience for you.
On our programmes, you will not only experience everything we love about our home, but also discover your own connection to the Arctic. Whether you let us teach you how to drive a sled or allow a four-legged hiking companion to show you their favourite trails, Tromsø Villmarkssenter is your home in the wilderness.
