About Wondering Reindeer

Wondering Reindeer is a Sámi experience company established by two childhood friends from a small Sámi village. We grew up in families connected to reindeer herding and Sámi is our mother tongue.

We offer Sámi-guided bus tours from Tromsø city centre to local communities along the coastal road on Kvaløya. During the tour, we visit Kaldfjord, Kattfjord, Sommarøy, Brensholmen and Buvik.

Our tours combine several different experiences:

  • We visit our reindeer herd, which lives freely near Buvik. Guests can watch the reindeer herder call the reindeer using a bell. The visit also includes a small, traditional lavvo and a campfire. When the herd has gathered and comes close enough, there may be an opportunity to feed the reindeer by hand.

  • We share knowledge about both Sea Sámi and reindeer-herding Sámi culture.

  • Guests join a sightseeing tour by bus along the coast of Kvaløya, surrounded by mountains and Arctic fjords.

  • If we are fortunate enough to see the Northern Lights during the tour, we will stop at suitable locations to take photographs and admire the phenomenon.

  • We visit Sommarøy, a group of islands in the open sea, approximately one hour’s drive from Tromsø. Guests have time to explore the local community on foot and enjoy views of the sea and white sandy beaches.

  • Food and drinks are served at Sommarøy Arctic Hotel.

  • We are approved in food safety, health and safety, and the presentation of Sámi culture, and certified by the County Governor of Troms and Finnmark.

Wondering Reindeer holds a licence to transport passengers by bus.
