A Private Guided Wildlife Experience in Arctic Landscapes.

General information

This tour is operated by Up in the Arctic.

Meet the king of the Arctic forests on this privately organised tour! The Bardufoss region is home to a large population of wild moose – Europe’s largest land mammal. Your guide will take you on a safari adventure to experience these magnificent animals in their natural habitat – on their own terms.

Your guide will meet you at Up in the Arctic's office at Høgtun in Målselv. Before heading out in search of moose, your guide will share fascinating insights into the animals, the surrounding landscape and the local moose-hunting culture. We will drive to areas where the chances of seeing these gentle giants are highest, while keeping a respectful distance to avoid disturbing them. If you are lucky, you may also spot other wildlife along the way, including reindeer, foxes and various Arctic bird species.

The inland climate of the Bardufoss region provides calm and clear weather conditions throughout much of the winter, creating ideal conditions for moose safaris. The area has a very large moose population, and during the winter season we experience countless encounters with these fascinating giants in the beautiful Målselvdalen Valley. Your guide has extensive knowledge of local flora and fauna, gained through a lifetime in the Arctic, academic studies in biology and geology, and many years of experience as a wilderness guide.

After the driving safari, your guide will take you into the forest to look for moose tracks and other signs of moose activity. We travel on snowshoes through the forest to our private hunting cabin – a small log cabin where you will be served a warm meal.

Please note that this experience is based on observing wildlife in its natural environment. Ethical wildlife viewing is our highest priority, and we therefore cannot guarantee specific sightings or wildlife encounters. However, we promise to do our very best to maximise your chances of a memorable experience and make your tour unforgettable.

This is a private tour, and we only accept one booking per departure.

About Up in the Arctic

Up in the Arctic offers guided wilderness experiences that bring guests closer to Arctic nature, wildlife, local culture and traditions.

Our tours invite you to explore the Arctic wilderness with guides who know the area and call the region home. Experiences may include wildlife encounters, Northern Lights and journeys through the varied landscapes of Northern Norway.

We aim to operate responsibly and with respect for nature and local communities. Along the way, we share stories, traditions and knowledge of life in the Arctic.

Who are the experiences suitable for?

Participants should have a basic level of fitness. We travel on foot during summer and use snowshoes in winter. The walks are neither long nor particularly demanding, but most of the experience takes place outdoors in wilderness areas.

Participants must wear clothing suitable for Arctic weather conditions. The experiences are suitable for guests aged 12 and over.

Food and dietary requirements

When the weather allows, meals are served outdoors by the campfire. We aim to share the region’s food culture by including local food and traditions in our experiences.

Vegetarian and vegan options are available, and most allergies can be accommodated. Please inform us of any dietary requirements in advance.
