Friends enjoying the outdoors in winter landscape by the sea in the Tromso region

Things to do in the Tromsø region during Easter

Easter in Tromsø offers a mix of Arctic adventures, Norwegian traditions and exciting attractions. Join a northern lights chase, go cross-country skiing with a Kvikk Lunsj chocolate bar in your backpack, visit museums and explore the nature and region surrounding the city. Here you’ll find inspiration and useful tips on what to do in Tromsø during Easter.

Experience Arctic adventures

Although spring is approaching, there are still good chances to see the northern lights in Tromsø in early April. Join a northern lights experience or a guided chase, where experienced guides take you to the best locations to witness the magical lights dancing across the sky.

Many locals in Northern Norway have a tradition of going ice fishing during Easter. Why not try it yourself on a guided ice fishing trip?

You can also be pulled through the winter landscape by an eager team of huskies, or join a snowmobile tour if you prefer a bit more speed and engine power. On a Sami experience, you’ll learn about Sami culture and meet the beautiful reindeer.

If you’d like to experience Tromsø from the sea, you can join a fjord cruise, or get to know the city and its history on a sightseeing tour.

If you’re tempted by a refreshing dip in the Arctic waters of the Tromsø Sound followed by relaxation in a warm sauna, both Pust and The HotSpot (by Vervet Adventures) are open during Easter.

There are plenty of opportunities for memorable experiences.

Visit the city’s attractions

Most of the city’s attractions remain open during Easter. Meet seals and Arctic wildlife at Polaria. Learn about nature and life in the north at the Arctic University Museum of Norway. The Polar Museum offers fascinating exhibitions on Northern Norwegian trapping and polar expeditions.

If you’re travelling with children, the Northern Norwegian Science Centre is perfect for exploration and learning, while the Troll Museum introduces you to mythical figures from Northern Norwegian folklore.

If you plan to visit several attractions, we recommend the Tromsø Pass, available at the tourist information centre. It gives you a 10% discount on entry to several of the city’s attractions. The tourist information office is closed on public holidays during Easter but is open on Saturday. Find our opening hours here.

Please note that the Fjellheisen cable car is closed until 1 June 2026 due to maintenance. It may open on selected days during Easter, depending on progress. Check Fjellheisen.no for updates.

Go skiing or snowshoeing

Going on a trip with skis or snowshoes is a must during Easter. If you don’t have your own equipment, you can rent skis or snowshoes from Tromsø Outdoor.

Here you can read about 8 places we recommend for hiking, skiing or snowshoeing. Wondering what to pack? Check our tips on how to pack your backpack.

The best option is to join an organised tour. This ensures your safety and gives you the best possible experience with knowledgeable local guides. We do not recommend heading into the mountains or going ski touring without a local guide.

You can also take the ski bus to Kattfjordeidet or Tønsvika, but please note that these locations have no facilities such as food, drinks, equipment or toilets. You must also pay close attention to weather conditions and avalanche risk. We do not recommend visiting unless you are experienced with Arctic weather and avalanche conditions.

Stay in a cabin

Spending Easter in a cabin with family or friends is a classic Norwegian tradition. Explore cabins and holiday homes here.

Your Easter holiday doesn’t have to stop in Tromsø. In the surrounding region, you can stay in the heart of wild and beautiful nature, surrounded by high mountains, deep fjords and star-filled skies.
